Threlsay Hill

The walk up Threlsay Hill rewards you with proper moorland views that stretch across the Pennine fringe - nothing fancy, just honest fell scenery. It's the sort of peak that doesn't announce itself loudly, which means you won't fight crowds on the way up from Skipton. The summit sits at a decent height without being a full day's commitment, making it ideal for walkers who want fresh air and a real landscape without the gridlock of more famous spots.

Getting up there takes between an hour and ninety minutes depending on your pace and the route you choose. The ground can be wet and boggy in places - proper Lancashire moorland - so decent boots matter more than fancy kit. Visibility on a clear day is the real draw here; the views back towards Skipton and out across the valleys make the effort worthwhile. On a murky afternoon, though, it's all a bit underwhelming.

This is a walker's hill rather than a family picnic destination. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to rural walking, but there's nothing to stop and explore once you're up there - no cafe, no viewpoint installation, just space and air. That's either exactly what you want or not at all.

If you're staying at Thornton Hall Country Park - less than a mile away - you've basically got this on your doorstep. It works well as a morning sortie before heading into Skipton for lunch, or as part of a wider Pennine walking day if you're basing yourself at one of the other parks in the valley.
