Thistley Hill

The walk up Thistley Hill isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make your thighs remind you of it the next morning. From Carnforth, it's a solid hour's trek to the summit, and honestly, the view rewards the effort - proper fell country stretching out in all directions, with the Lake District visible on clear days if you squint hard enough.

This is walkers' territory. The peak itself isn't dramatic or famous like some of the showier Yorkshire fells, which means you won't fight crowds to stand on the trig point. Families with young kids might find it a bit much unless they're already used to the hills - there's no easing into it. But for anyone serious about walking, it's a crackling half-day outing that doesn't demand an entire day commitment.

There's no café at the top, so bring water and something to eat. Early morning is best, both for the light and to dodge whatever weather systems roll in off the Irish Sea. The path itself is well-trodden but boggy in places, so proper boots aren't optional.

If you're staying at Orcaber Farm or The Dalesbridge just down the road, this makes an excellent morning sortie before a lazy afternoon back at the campsite. Peaks and Pods, being slightly further out, works too if you're after a longer day combining a couple of nearby hills. It's the sort of walk that doesn't make Instagram famous but leaves you genuinely satisfied.
