The White Wall - Berwick Castle

The massive sandstone curtain wall that dominates Berwick's skyline is one of England's finest examples of 16th-century military engineering. Walk the full circuit and you'll understand why - the sheer scale of it, built when the Tudors decided to fortify this fiercely disputed border town, is genuinely impressive. You can stride along the top of most sections, and the views across the Tweed estuary and over the town proper are worth the climb alone.

It's not a "visit an attraction" sort of place - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no entrance fee to pay. You simply turn up and walk. That's rather refreshing, to be honest. The ramparts take about an hour to complete if you go at a gentle pace, stopping to read the plaques that explain the history. History buffs will get genuine value here; kids might manage 20 minutes before asking if you can get ice cream. The best light for photographs is late afternoon when the sun catches the stonework properly.

Berwick itself is a proper little gem just a short stroll away - narrow streets, good restaurants, the old bridge. If you're based at Haven Berwick Holiday Centre or Berwick Seaview, you're barely half a mile away, making this an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. The ramparts work well combined with a walk down to the river or a potter around the town's Georgian squares. Not dramatic, not Instagram-famous, but solidly worthwhile if you're in the area.
