The white path

The white path near Clitheroe is a proper walk through Lancashire limestone country, nothing fancy but exactly what you need if you're after some honest fell-walking without the crowds. It's a nature reserve where the ground beneath your feet - that distinctive pale stone - gives the route its name, winding through moorland with decent views across the Ribble Valley.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours depending on pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath on the inclines. It's well-suited to families with older kids and serious walkers, though it's not a gentle stroll - the terrain's uneven and there are a few steep sections. History buffs will appreciate the industrial heritage scattered about; there's evidence of old quarrying and lime-working if you know where to look.

Being free and accessible makes it a proper gem for a park holiday. You can knock this out in an afternoon and still have time for a pint in Clitheroe town centre afterwards. Go when the weather's settled; after heavy rain the path gets muddy and loses some appeal. Spring and autumn are ideal. Bring decent boots and water. It's the sort of walk that doesn't photograph brilliantly but feels genuinely rewarding once you're out there.
