The Stone Bridge

Standing on the banks of the River Tawe in central Swansea, this medieval crossing has been quietly doing its job for centuries. The Stone Bridge - also known locally as the Old Bridge - is that rare thing: a proper piece of Welsh history you can walk across without paying a penny or booking anything in advance.

It's not flashy. The bridge itself is fairly compact, with weathered stone that tells you immediately this isn't some Victorian reconstruction. You get decent views down the river valley towards the docks and, on a clear day, across towards Swansea Bay. The surrounding area is genuinely pleasant for a wander - the riverside footpaths are well-maintained and the whole thing feels refreshingly removed from the shopping centre bustle just upstream.

This appeals most to history enthusiasts and anyone doing a proper walking route through Swansea rather than casual day-trippers. You won't spend hours here, but it's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're exploring the town's older quarters or heading towards Singleton Park. Allow twenty minutes to potter about and soak in the views.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Swansea Marina Tourer Park is closest at just over three miles - it's easily reached by car and makes a decent leg-stretch destination between coastal drives. Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park, further out at five miles, sits in a far more dramatic landscape, but the Stone Bridge works perfectly as a complementary urban cultural moment. Free access, no crowds, proper local atmosphere.
