The Somme Memorial

It's located in Lisburn and Castlereagh, just a short drive south of Belfast, and it's genuinely affecting rather than maudlin.

What you actually get is a memorial and visitor space dedicated to those soldiers. The architecture itself makes a statement without needing to shout about it. You can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours here, depending on how much you want to read and reflect. Many visitors find an hour about right.

This works best for anyone interested in First World War history or family members researching ancestors - it's not a theme park experience, so don't bring restless toddlers expecting entertainment. Older kids and teens studying the period will find it properly engaging. It's genuinely free admission, which is refreshing.

If you're based at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park or The Pods at Streamvale just down the road, you're ideally placed to visit without faffing about with long drives. Both sites are close enough that you could make this a half-morning trip, then spend the afternoon elsewhere. Go midweek if you can - it feels more contemplative when you're not jostling with school groups. Winter visits have a particular weight to them, if you can stomach the weather. It's not cheerful, but it matters.
