Somme Museum

The Somme Museum sits just outside Belfast, a sobering walk through one of the First World War's bloodiest campaigns. It's not a cheerful afternoon out - it's properly heavy going, and that's entirely the point. The museum focuses on the 36th (Ulster) Division and the 16th (Irish) Division, two units that suffered catastrophic losses in the summer of 1916.

Inside, you get personal letters, photographs, uniforms, and weapons arranged chronologically. The centrepiece is an immersive trench experience - they've reconstructed a section of frontline, complete with sounds and darkness. It's effective, sometimes uncomfortable. Real visitors come away with a sense of the war's mechanical horror rather than any romantic notion of it.
