The Snipes

The Snipes is a proper woodland walk just outside Dunmow - nothing fancy, just mature trees, winding paths and the kind of quiet you don't get in Essex very often. It's the sort of place you go when you want to stretch your legs without faffing about with visitor centres or paying for parking.

The forest itself is dense enough to feel like a genuine escape, even though you're only minutes from town. Ground's soft underfoot most of the time, which means it drains reasonably well after rain. You'll see oak and beech mostly, with a decent canopy that makes it feel properly green rather than like walking through a plantation. The paths aren't marked with military precision, so bring a sense of direction or a map - that's half the appeal, really.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a sit-and-stare sort of destination - no dramatic views or café at the end - but if you're after a two-hour woodland circuit, it does the job well. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour unless the children are genuinely keen on trees and hunting for wildlife.

If you're based at Dairymeade Farm Glamping or Golden Grove Caravan Park nearby, The Snipes makes for a morning outing before heading somewhere with more going on. It's the kind of place that reminds you why Essex has pockets worth exploring, without pretending to be something it isn't.
