The Racecourse

The Racecourse at Llandrindod Wells is a proper Victorian affair - flat, well-maintained turf with a grandstand that's seen better days but retains genuine period charm. Horse racing happens here a handful of times a year, mostly during summer months, and it's the sort of place where locals actually know the form and regular punters have their favourite spots on the rails.

What strikes you first is how green everything is. The track itself curves gently through farmland, and there's something wonderfully low-key about the whole setup compared to the major courses. Admission on race days costs a modest fee (check ahead for exact figures), and you can spend anywhere from three to five hours depending on how many races you fancy. The atmosphere is family-friendly without being theme-park-ified - proper racing, proper crowds, proper tea and sandwiches in the pavilion.

It's worth timing a visit around one of the race meetings if you're staying at Disserth Caravan & Camping Park, just six miles away. The park makes an ideal base for exploring the wider Llandrindod area, and the racecourse works as a decent afternoon diversion - particularly if you've got teenagers who've exhausted the local walks. Those serious about racing will appreciate the genuine article; casual visitors might find a single meeting enough. Check the racing calendar before you book your holiday, though - missing race day means just an empty field.
