The Pot

The Pot is a proper little freshwater loch that sits just inland from Peterhead, and it's one of those places that doesn't shout about itself. You won't find coach tours here. What you get instead is a quiet stretch of water that's genuinely pleasant if you're staying at Peterhead Marina Bay Holiday Park and fancy a break from the coast.

It's a working fishing spot, so you'll see locals with rods more often than tourists with cameras. The walk around it takes maybe an hour depending on your pace - nothing strenuous, just a gentle circuit through proper Scottish countryside. The banks are accessible in most places, though it can get a bit boggy after rain. Bring decent shoes.

Birds do well here. If you've got binoculars and any patience at all, you'll spot something. Grey herons, various ducks, and on a good day some rarer visitors. Photographers come for that reason, though the light can be tricky unless you time it right.

Honestly? It's not a destination in itself. You wouldn't drive an hour to see it. But if you're based nearby - say at the holiday park - it's a solid way to spend a couple of hours without fighting crowds. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after 30 minutes unless fishing holds their attention. For walkers and anyone after a bit of peace and quiet, it delivers.
