Blockie Head Fort

The walk out to Blockie Head Fort catches you off guard. You're leaving Peterhead heading northeast along the coast, and suddenly there it is - a squat, solid stone fortress perched on the rocks like it's daring the North Sea to come and have a go. Built in the 1880s as a coastal defence battery, it's one of those Victorian-era structures that feels properly purposeful, even if the threat it was meant to repel never actually materialised.

What you get is a chance to poke around the gun emplacements and peer into the casemates where soldiers once stood watch. The stonework is thick and deliberate, and there's something compelling about standing inside those walls knowing they were built to withstand a naval bombardment that never came. The views back towards Peterhead are solid too - industrial harbour sprawl mixing with the actual sea, which is somehow more interesting than generic coastal scenery.

It's not a place you'll spend hours at. The fort itself takes maybe thirty to forty minutes unless you're really into military engineering, but the walk there and back gives you a proper leg stretch and a bit of Aberdeenshire headland in your afternoon. History buffs will find it worthwhile. Kids might get restless unless they're the type who enjoys clamber about old stone fortifications.
