Bullers of Buchan

The sea cliffs north of Peterhead drop away suddenly, and you're standing at the edge of a proper chasm. The Bullers of Buchan is a collapsed sea cave - a horseshoe-shaped inlet carved into red sandstone cliffs that rear up about 80 metres from the churning water below. It's raw and dramatic in a way that makes you grip the railings a bit tighter than you'd expect.

What strikes you most is the sheer volume of seabirds. Guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes - they pack these cliff faces like flats in a tower block. If you come in spring or early summer, the noise is almost overwhelming, and the air smells of salt and guano. Autumn's quieter, but the light's often better, catching the rust-coloured rock face just right.

The walk from the car park at Cruden Bay is short and straightforward - maybe 15 minutes through scrubland to the viewpoint. It's free, and there's nothing to pay for except petrol to get there. Allow an hour if you want to sit with it, take photos, maybe spot dolphins if you're lucky. Kids who aren't afraid of heights will love it; toddlers need watching carefully near the edge.

Stay at Peterhead Marina Bay Holiday Park, about five miles south, and you've got a solid base for exploring this stretch of Aberdeenshire coast. The Bullers won't take all day, but it's the kind of place that lingers. Bleak, beautiful, and properly unforgettable.
