The Jetty Gallery

The waterfront location alone makes this worth a stop when you're in Oban. The Jetty Gallery sits right on the harbour where the light bounces off the water and actually changes how the art looks throughout the day - which sounds pretentious until you stand there and realise it's genuinely true.

It's a working gallery space with rotating exhibitions, so what's on depends when you visit. Generally you'll find contemporary work from Scottish and regional artists - paintings, sculpture, occasionally installations. Nothing too experimental or baffling, just solid stuff that engages without requiring an art history degree.

The appeal is really in the setting rather than it being a destination in itself. Oban's a proper wee harbour town with boats coming and going, and the gallery benefits from that working atmosphere. You're looking at paintings and sculptures while actual fishing boats move past the windows. It takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour properly, less if nothing particularly grabs you.

Families with older kids will find it reasonable - younger ones might get restless quickly, it's not interactive. Walkers stopping between Oban town centre and the seafront will likely pop in anyway. If you're based at Oban Holiday Park or any of the nearby pods and caravans, it's a five-minute walk to stretch your legs and see what's on.

Check ahead for opening hours and current exhibitions - these smaller galleries can be a bit variable with their schedules. Free admission would be typical for this sort of space, but worth confirming.
