Cnoc Càrnach

The walk up Cnoc Càrnach rewards you with one of those rare views that actually lives up to the hype. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards - nothing that demands serious mountaineering kit - but the vistas across Argyll's lochs and islands justify the effort from Oban.

You're looking at roughly two hours up and back depending on fitness, with a steady climb through mixed terrain that keeps things interesting. The path isn't always obvious, which honestly adds to the appeal if you like a bit of navigation. On a clear day the panorama stretches toward Ben Cruachan and across to the Hebrides. When the cloud rolls in (and it will), visibility drops to nothing, so timing matters.

This suits walkers rather than casual strollers, and families with older kids who won't complain about steep sections. It's not a destination for toddlers or anyone after a leisurely amble. Most people allow three hours all-in, including photo stops and a breather at the top.

There's no charge to climb it - it's a proper hill, free and open. Starting from near Oban makes this a natural fit if you're based at one of the holiday parks within a few miles: Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin are closest, while Oban Holiday Park gives you a bigger site with more facilities. The town itself is worth an afternoon, and the climb works as a morning activity before exploring the coast.

Go when weather permits. A dreich day here is genuinely miserable.
