The Height

The Height sits just outside Skipton, a proper fell walk that delivers genuine views across the Ribble Valley without demanding the endurance of the bigger Pennine peaks. You're looking at moorland, grassland, and on a clear day, sight lines that stretch towards Pendle Hill and the Yorkshire Dales. It's not a long slog - most walkers manage it in under two hours - but the climb is steep enough to feel earned.

This one's best for people who want a real walk without committing their whole day to it. Families with older kids will get something out of it; younger ones might find the push to the summit a bit much. History types won't find much up there beyond the views, but that's rather the point. Walkers just wanting decent fell air and some elevation will rate it highly.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself - bring your own water. It's free to access and open year-round, though winter mud can make the path properly treacherous. Go on a clear day if you can; the valley disappears into grey on wet afternoons and you'll have hiked uphill for nothing but clouds.

It sits nicely within reach of the holiday parks scattered around Skipton - Thornton Hall and Hedgerow Glamping are closest - so you could tack it onto a longer valley break without too much palaver. The walk itself is straightforward enough that navigation isn't a headache, but take proper boots. The moorland turf hides rabbit holes.
