The Fairbourne Railway

A narrow-gauge railway that actually works - you board a proper steam or diesel train and rattle along a mile-and-a-half track towards the beach. It's been running since 1916, which gives you some idea of how seriously they take this. The journey takes about 20 minutes each way, and you're sat in genuine railway carriages watching the coast slide past. It's not a vast operation, nothing like the bigger heritage railways you might find elsewhere, but that's partly why it works so well.

Kids absolutely love it, particularly if they're into trains or just fancy doing something different. Adults who remember proper railways find it genuinely moving. You'll spot families packing the carriages most weekends, and on school holidays it gets rammed. The ticket prices are reasonable for what you're getting - an actual ride on actual rails with actual character, not a theme park approximation.

It sits just outside Barmouth, making it a natural add-on if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby like Hendre Mynach or Graig Wen. Pop in for an hour between beach time and lunch, or make it a proper morning out. The trains run daily in summer, weekends only in winter, so check ahead. Best visited early or mid-week if you want to avoid the queues. The staff know what they're doing and genuinely care about keeping the thing running. Worth the detour if you're in the area, and perfectly timed to break up a week of seaside walks and traditional park entertainment.
