Ffridd y Graig

The walk up Ffridd y Graig rewards you with proper mountain views across Cardigan Bay and the sweep of Barmouth beach below. It's not a slog - the peak sits at a modest height but commands the landscape in a way that makes the effort worthwhile.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical climb. The path climbs steadily through moorland with decent views opening up as you gain height. On a clear day you can see right across to the Llŷn Peninsula. The summit itself is marked and relatively compact - you won't spend hours up there, but the vantage point over Barmouth and the coastal stretch makes it a solid afternoon's outing.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's accessible enough for families with reasonable fitness, though younger children might find the ascent tedious on the way down. The terrain is moorland rather than dramatic peaks, so don't come expecting Alpine drama. What you get instead is that Welsh mountain light and space - the kind of place where you feel properly away from things despite being close to Barmouth town.

It's free to walk, naturally. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on pace. Spring through early autumn are best - the weather can turn on you quickly in winter. If you're camped at Hendre Mynach or Lyons Sunnysands, this sits on your doorstep. Worth combining with Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls a few miles south if you want to stretch a day out.
