Ffridd Fechan Hillfort

Getting to Ffridd Fechan requires a proper walk, which is precisely why most tourists never bother. You're looking at an Iron Age hillfort - stone ramparts, defensive ditches, the whole defensive setup from roughly 2,000 years ago - perched above Barmouth in the Gwynedd hills. The views across Cardigan Bay alone make the trek worthwhile, regardless of your interest in archaeology.

It's free to visit, though you'll need decent boots and at least an hour to reach it properly from town. The walk isn't technically difficult, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it. What makes it rewarding is the isolation. This isn't a manicured heritage site with information boards and a café.
