The Crammer

The Crammer sits just outside Calne like a proper local secret - a modest lake that rewards a quiet walk far more than any Instagram caption could suggest. It's nothing grand, mind you. What you get is water, trees, and the kind of silence that makes you remember why you came to Wiltshire in the first place rather than staying on the motorway.

The walk around it takes a decent hour if you're not rushing, and the paths are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though it's not a destination for buggies. Birdwatchers genuinely rate it, especially in the shoulder seasons when migrations pick up. The water itself is calm - good for a sit and think, terrible for swimming.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no fees that I'm aware of. Just turn up and use it. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have it to yourself, which is frankly the point. Weekends bring the local dog walkers, which is fine but loses something of the atmosphere.

It works brilliantly as a gentle morning out from any of the surrounding glamping sites - Mill Farm is barely twenty minutes away, and Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site closer still. Pair it with a proper walk elsewhere (there's decent countryside all around), or use it as a decompression spot after a busier day exploring the area. Don't expect drama. Expect stillness.
