The Cludders

The Cludders is a proper fell-side landmark that catches you off guard the first time you spot it. Rising from the moorland above Glamping in West Yorkshire, it's a striking rock formation that looks far more dramatic than the modest walk to reach it suggests. The stone itself is weather-beaten and substantial, commanding views across the Pennine landscape that shift depending on the light and season.

You'll want to allow an hour or so for the walk and a good twenty minutes to properly take in the views and scramble about on the rocks themselves. It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers who know the area rather than casual visitors - the approach isn't signposted brilliantly, and there's nothing in the way of facilities nearby. If you're stopping at Trawden Forest Glamping or Old Chamber Camping, both within easy striking distance, it makes a solid half-day outing that pairs well with the surrounding moorland walks.

Historically minded folk might get more from it than families with younger children, who could find the exposed moorland a touch underwhelming once they've clambered on the rocks for ten minutes. Best visited on a clear day when the views actually justify the trek. Wet weather renders it less appealing - the moors can feel rather bleak when the clouds roll in, and the rocks become slippery. Spring and early autumn tend to be ideal, when you get decent visibility without the summer crowds that occasionally gather here.
