The Bower

Climb the hill above Sheringham and you'll spot what looks like a proper folly perched on the clifftop. The Bower is actually a Victorian viewing tower, built in 1862 as part of the Sheringham Hall estate to take advantage of the cracking sea views across the North Sea. Standing about 30 feet tall, this octagonal stone tower feels like something from a fairy tale.

History buffs will appreciate the Victorian grandeur, while photographers can't resist the dramatic shots of the coastline stretching towards Cromer. The walk up from Sheringham takes about 20 minutes through woodland paths - not too taxing but you'll feel it in your calves.

Families with young children might find the trek a bit much, especially if little legs get tired. But for anyone who fancies a proper walk with a reward at the end, it's well worth the effort. The views on a clear day are genuinely spectacular.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Kelling Heath or Beeston Regis, this makes for a lovely morning expedition before hitting Sheringham's beaches. The tower itself is free to admire from the outside, though you can't climb inside anymore. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip including time to soak up those coastal vistas.
