The Bell Hillfort

You're standing on a windy hilltop near Wooler looking at what remains of an Iron Age fort - a series of earthen banks and ditches that once enclosed a settlement around 2,000 years ago. The Bell Hillfort sits high enough that you get proper views across the Cheviot hills, which makes the trek up worthwhile even if the archaeology isn't immediately obvious to the untrained eye.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, just earthworks and views. Walkers heading out from Wooler will get the most from it as a waypoint on a longer route rather than a standalone visit.

No admission charge that I'm aware of, and you can visit any time since it's just an open hillside. The nearest caravan parks - Highburn House and Riverside Wooler Holiday Park - are both within six miles, so it works as a morning excursion from a Northumberland base. Allow an hour including the walk up and a good scout around.
