Teemley Hill

The walk up Teemley Hill from Settle takes you straight into proper Pennine country. It's not a massive peak - nothing that'll have you gasping for air or needing specialist kit - but the views across the limestone plateau are genuinely worth the leg work. On a clear day you can see for miles, the kind of uncluttered vista that makes you understand why people come to Lancashire's hills rather than heading further north into the Lake District.

The ascent itself is straightforward enough, following well-trodden paths through moorland and rough grass. Allow an hour or so up, depending on your pace and whether you stop to catch your breath (no shame in that). It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids, or anyone after a half-day ramble rather than an epic expedition. Younger children might find the exposed moorland a bit boring though - there's not much to see once you're halfway up, just horizon and wind.

Teemley Hill works brilliantly as part of a wider Settle exploration. The town itself is proper charming, built on the back of the railway and still centred around that sense of Victorian ambition. Staying at Peaks and Pods, just over two miles away, gives you a comfortable base without the fussiness of a hotel. From there you could easily combine this walk with exploring the various crags and limestone features that litter the area. Summer's the obvious choice - the exposed ridge gets bleak in winter - though spring and early autumn offer clearer skies without the midges.
