Pikeber Hill

The walk up Pikeber Hill from Settle is steep but short - you're looking at maybe forty minutes up, depending on fitness. Once you're at the top, the Ribble Valley spreads out below you properly, which makes the scramble worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak by Lake District standards, but it does the job if you're based nearby and fancy something quick without committing to a half-day expedition.

The climb itself is the main event here. There's no faffing about with switchbacks - it goes up and you keep going up. The path's reasonably clear but it can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are sensible. The views from the summit aren't spectacular enough to excuse a long detour, but if you're staying at one of the local camping pods at Peaks and Pods or Hedgerow Luxury Glamping, it's an excellent way to blow off steam before breakfast.

Walkers will get more from this than casual visitors. It's the kind of hill that rewards the effort of getting to the top rather than the destination itself. On a clear day you can see toward Pen-y-ghent and the wider Pennine ridge, which puts things in perspective. Families with younger children might find the steepness frustrating - it's not a gentle stroll.

Free to access, no visitor facilities at the summit. Go early if you can, especially weekends, as the car park near Settle fills quickly. Allow two hours return if you're not pushing hard.
