Tavistock Parish Church

The church sits bang in the middle of Tavistock's town centre, and you can't miss it - a solid stone building that's been watching over the place since medieval times. St Eustachius Church, to give it its full name, has that proper Devon character about it: granite walls, a decent tower, and inside there's enough history to keep anyone interested for a good twenty minutes or so.

What strikes you first is how it anchors the whole town. The churchyard's pleasant enough for a wander, and if you're into parish churches at all - and you're staying at either Langstone Manor or Woodovis just down the road - this is absolutely worth poking your head inside. The interior's got some nice features if you know what to look for, and there's a real sense that this place matters to Tavistock.

It's free to visit and there's no nonsense with opening times - you just turn up during daylight. Allow yourself fifteen to thirty minutes depending on how much you want to read the plaques and soak up the atmosphere. History buffs will get more from it than casual visitors, but anyone with even a passing interest in old buildings will find it decent. It works well as a stop when you're exploring the town centre itself, rather than a destination in its own right. Pair it with a nose round Tavistock's independent shops and you've got a proper morning sorted.
