Tarnclose Plantation

The forest floor at Tarnclose is thick with needles and moss - the kind of place where your footsteps barely make a sound. It's a proper working plantation just outside Armathwaite, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor centres. What you get instead is the real thing: rows of conifers, plenty of shade, and genuine quiet.

Walkers get the most from this one. The trails wind through the trees in a way that feels purposeful rather than aimless, and if you're after a proper woodland walk without the crowds of the Lake District's honeypot sites, this delivers. The plantation has that slightly austere beauty of managed forest - it's not wild, but it's working land, which has its own appeal. Give yourself an hour minimum, though you could easily stretch it to two if you've got legs and time.

It's free to explore, which is worth knowing. The nearest facilities are in Armathwaite itself - not exactly a hub, but you'll find what you need. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Englethwaite Hall is excellent and only four miles away, as is Eden Valley Glamping - Tarnclose makes for a decent addition to a day's walking rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the wider Eden Valley landscape and you've got a solid morning sorted.

Best visited when it's dry. Muddy here means genuinely muddy.
