Tootop Wood

There's something about walking into Tootop Wood that pulls you away from the Cumbrian flatlands and into proper forest quiet. This isn't a destination with visitor centres or tea rooms - it's a stretch of woodland near Armathwaite where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels increasingly rare these days.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous and conifer, the kind of place where the light comes through in shafts on a good day. Paths wind through without being over-managed or signposted to death. You're looking at somewhere between an hour and three hours depending on how far you fancy going and whether you stop to sit on a log and just exist for a bit. Families with young kids won't struggle with it, though it's not a playground.

This is where the proximity to Englethwaite Hall Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Eden Valley Glamping actually works in your favour. You're staying nearby with proper facilities, but you get to escape into something that feels genuinely wild rather than manicured. If you're basing yourself at any of the three parks in the area - Drybeck Farm is the furthest out at under six miles - you've got a proper woodland walk on your doorstep without needing to drive to the Lakes.

Word of warning: come prepared for mud. The Cumbrian weather being what it is, Tootop Wood can be boggy, so wellington boots aren't optional. And there's no information board to tell you what you're looking at, so a decent tree identification app becomes your friend. But that's rather the point, isn't it.
