Hayton Moss

The forest here is proper bog-standard Cumbrian woodland - nothing flash, but a decent walk if you're staying in Armathwaite and fancy stretching your legs. Hayton Moss is exactly what it sounds like: coniferous plantation with a few older broadleaves thrown in, the sort of place where the ground squelches underfoot after rain and the air smells of damp pine needles.

It's a straightforward ramble rather than a showstopper. You won't find dramatic views or dramatic anything, really, but it's the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think. Maybe forty minutes to an hour round trip if you're ambling, longer if you get sidetracked by the moss beds that give the place its name. Kids might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes unless they're keen on spotting birds and looking for fungi.

Worth knowing: the place isn't really set up as a visitor attraction with facilities or proper trails marked out, so go in knowing it's low-key. Free to wander, obviously. Best tackled in autumn when the ground's less waterlogged, though it'll still be damp.

If you're camping at Englethwaite Hall or Eden Valley Glamping nearby, it's close enough for a morning walk before heading to bigger draws like High Cup Nick or the Eden Valley itself. Don't expect fairy-tale forest vibes - expect what you get: quiet woodland and solid fresh air. That's its charm, really.
