Coombs Wood

Walking into Coombs Wood feels like stepping back in time. The forest sits just outside Armathwaite in Cumbria, a proper bit of ancient woodland that's been here far longer than the caravan parks now dotting the surrounding countryside. Tall conifers mix with broadleaves, creating that distinctive Lake District blend - dense enough to feel secluded, but open enough that you can actually see where you're going.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. The woodland paths wind through quiet glades and offer a genuine escape from the busier tourist trails. You'll spot moss-covered stone walls from when the forest was still farmed piecemeal, and the understory is thick with ferns in spring. It's the kind of place where an hour disappears without you noticing. Kids do well here if they're the type to enjoy a proper woodland ramble rather than a marked trail with interpretation boards. Families with younger children might find it a bit too unstructured.

No visitor facilities that I'm aware of - bring water and sensible footwear because it can get boggy. The nearest settlements are small, so pack a picnic if you're staying at Drybeck Farm or one of the other campsites within a couple of miles. The proximity to Eden Valley Glamping makes it an obvious choice for a half-day woodland walk before or after exploring the broader Cumbrian landscape.

Worth doing once if you're in the area for a week-long stay. Not a destination in itself, but a proper gem for a wet-weather walk or a break from fell-tops.
