Tal y Mieryn

The pull of Tal y Mieryn is straightforward - it's a proper fell walk with genuine rewards, perched above Dolgellau in the Cader Idris range. The summit gives you sweeping views across the Mawddach estuary and into the Snowdonia depths, though you'll earn every metre of the ascent. It's steep, honest work, and that's rather the point.

Allow two to three hours return from the car park, depending on fitness. The path itself is well-trodden but relentless in places, and the weather can turn quickly - go on a clear morning if you want to see anything beyond cloud. Winter and early spring are often best for visibility, though it gets boggy after rain.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a casual stroll, and families with very young children might find it frustrating rather than fun. But teenagers who can handle gradient will love it, and anyone who enjoys the grit of actual fell-walking rather than gentle rambling will find it worth the effort.

Based near Dolgellau, you're well-placed for the broader Cader Idris area. Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park sits just 4.8 miles away with a solid five-star rating - proper facilities if you're planning several days of walking. Torrent Walk Campsite is another option, closer to some of the valley walks if Tal y Mieryn feels too demanding.

It's free to climb, obviously. No facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat. Go when conditions are decent, and don't expect an easy afternoon.
