Tŷ Mawr Hut Circles

Walk across windswept moorland near Holyhead and you're standing where people lived over 2,000 years ago. Tŷ Mawr Hut Circles are the remains of Iron Age roundhouses - circular stone foundations that once held timber frames and thatched roofs. There are several scattered across the site, some clearer than others, and the views across Anglesey's coastal landscape are genuinely arresting.

This is proper archaeology on the ground rather than museum glass cases. You won't find interpretation boards or visitor facilities, which means it requires a bit of imagination and ideally some knowledge of what you're looking at before you arrive. History enthusiasts and keen walkers will find it absorbing; families with young children might struggle unless they're the patient, exploratory type. The walk itself is straightforward but exposed - bring a windproof and decent boots.

It's free, naturally, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how thoroughly you want to examine each circle and how long you linger over the views. Late afternoon light works particularly well here. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Coastal Pods or Two Peas in a Pod, this makes a solid half-day excursion combined with Holyhead itself. Not the most dramatic archaeological site in Wales, but the isolation and the sense of real antiquity make it worth the journey from your caravan or pod.
