Capel Llochwydd (ruined)

The ruins of Capel Llochwydd sit on Anglesey like a secret that nobody bothers visiting. This is a medieval chapel reduced to its stone bones - just enough wall remaining to give you the shape of what once stood here, a few kilometres outside Holyhead. You'll find it in open countryside, which is both the appeal and the slight letdown. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation board, no one selling you a ticket. You simply walk up and look at old rocks arranged in a rectangle.

It's worth the detour if you're already exploring Anglesey's archaeological sites or you're the kind of person who finds satisfaction in standing where medieval worshippers once knelt. The setting is atmospheric on a grey day - and they're frequent on the Welsh coast. Don't expect dramatic ruins or Instagram moments. What you get is quietness and the odd feeling of being in a place that's been forgotten for centuries.

Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from it. Families with restless kids will find it a bit thin for a dedicated trip. If you're staying at Coastal Pods or Two Peas in a Pod, both within walking distance, it's a pleasant thirty-minute ramble. Otherwise, couple it with Holyhead's other attractions or the coastal walks around the island. Allow thirty minutes maximum. No admission charge as far as I can tell - you just turn up. Best visited when the light's decent, which on Anglesey means any clear afternoon.
