Inside, you'll find ship models, salvage finds, old photographs and the kind of local sailing history that actually matters if you're staying in the area rather than just passing through.

The museum tells the story of what Barmouth was: a proper working port, not just a seaside resort. There's enough detail here to occupy a family for an hour - maybe less if your kids aren't into maritime stuff - but it's free, so there's no financial sting if you're only half-interested. The volunteers who run it clearly care, and that comes across.

It's best suited to walkers exploring Barmouth's seafront and anyone with even a passing interest in Welsh coastal life. Don't expect flashy interactive exhibits or anything slick; this is old-school museum work, which some will find refreshing and others might find a bit dated.

If you're camped at Hendre Mynach or Graig Wen - both within a couple of miles - it's worth a wet-weather hour, particularly on the drizzly days that Gwynedd specializes in. Pair it with a walk along the promenade and fish and chips from the front, and you've got a solid half-day. Just check opening hours before you go - they're not widely advertised online.
