Swan Lake

The lake itself is modest - a freshwater stretch that sits quietly inland from Weymouth, far enough away to feel like proper countryside rather than seaside overflow. You get waterfowl, the occasional angler, and decent views across the water if conditions are kind. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident.

Walkers will find it useful as a loop break, though don't expect dramatic scenery or rare birds to get your binoculars out. An hour is about right unless you're sitting down for a picnic. Families with young children can manage it fine - there's usually somewhere to sit and watch ducks, which keeps them occupied for longer than you'd think.

The real appeal is how it slots into a broader Dorset itinerary. You're close enough to Weymouth for the beach and amusements if the weather turns, but far enough inland that you can breathe. If you're based at Litton Lakes or Chesil Beach Lodge - both solid park options - Swan Lake works as a half-morning outing before heading elsewhere. Haven Littlesea is the biggest nearby choice and has better facilities, though it's a touch further out.

It's free, naturally, and there's no faffing about with opening hours. Go when you want. Best in spring when the water's fresh and there's proper light. Summer gets a bit muggy, and winter can feel bleak unless you're really into that sort of thing.
