Walking into Sugwell Hill Plantation near Petworth is like stepping into one of those proper working forests that feels neither manicured nor forgotten. It's a commercial woodland where you're genuinely surrounded by trees - conifers mostly, with enough open rides to stop you feeling claustrophobic. The main draw is simple: quiet woodland walking without the National Trust crowds. Expect forest floor underfoot, occasional glimpses of light through the canopy, and the kind of peace you don't get near towns.

This works best for adult walkers after a proper leg-stretch rather than families with small children hunting for drama. There are no designated trails, no café, no visitor facilities as far as I can tell - you're essentially navigating your own path through working woodland. That's either exactly what you want or it isn't. Worth the detour if you're basing yourself at Graffham or Wakestone & Wild Glamping nearby and fancy escaping the Sussex honeypots. The Petworth estate and its parkland are close by if you want something with more structure afterwards.

Go early in the day to avoid feeling like you're trespassing when forestry work kicks in. Bring a map or know your route - it's easy to lose your bearings in here. Free admission as far as anyone can tell, though access is essentially on sufferance. Not Instagram-friendly. Genuinely good for clearing your head though.
