Stump Cross Caverns

The moment you step into Stump Cross Caverns, the temperature drops and the world above ground feels very far away. These limestone caves sit up on the moors between Skipton and Grassington, and they're genuinely worth the drive if you're staying at any of the nearby parks. The main chamber opens up with proper impressive stalactites hanging from the ceiling - some of them have been forming for thousands of years, which puts your holiday week into perspective.

It's a straightforward walk through the accessible sections. Nothing too strenuous, though the floor can be slippery so proper footwear matters. Kids usually find the whole thing absorbing - there's something about underground passages that keeps them quiet for longer than any museum ever could. You'll want to allow a good hour here, maybe more if you're the type to read every information board.

The caverns work brilliantly as a wet-weather option when the Dales are looking grey, or as a break from the usual hillside walks. If you're based at Howgill Lodge or Bolton Abbey's caravan sites, you're close enough to pop over without making a whole day of it. The car park and facilities are basic but functional - standard Yorkshire moor stuff.

Check opening times before you go, as they do close for maintenance. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable for what amounts to a proper geological tour. The caves themselves do the talking though - no need for fancy theming when you've got 350 million years of natural architecture on your side.
