Strines Edge

The walk up Strines Edge rewards you with a proper vantage point across the Hope Valley - one of those high points where you suddenly understand why people have tramped these Derbyshire moors for centuries. It's not mountaineering, but it's a real walk that takes genuine effort.

You're looking at moorland terrain from start to finish. The peak itself sits along a ridge with decent views in most directions, though the landscape is more austere than dramatic - rolling hills rather than jagged drama. On a clear day you can pick out the distinctive shapes of other peaks in the area. On a murky one, it's just you and the grit stone. Either way, it focuses the mind.

This is squarely walker territory. Families with young kids will find it heavy going unless they're the sort accustomed to negotiating moorland in wellies. For anyone based at East Peak, North Lees, or Wyming Brook Farm campsites nearby, it's a proper half or full day out - not a quick leg-stretch. Allow three to four hours for a steady ascent and descent. The ground underfoot is what you'd expect: boggy in patches, firmer on the upper ridge.

Bring a map and check the weather forecast beforehand. This isn't a trail where you can wing it. Spring and autumn are the best bets - summer can be warm and muddy simultaneously, which is its own special kind of misery. Winter demands care. There's no cafe at the top, no visitor centre, no facilities whatsoever. Just the moor and the view. Exactly how it should be.
