Over Owler Tor

Scrambling up the rocky outcrop feels proper rewarding when you reach the top and see the sweeping views across the Dark Peak. Over Owler Tor stands at 420 metres, making it one of the more modest peaks in the Peak District, but what it lacks in height it makes up for in character. The gritstone edges and weathered rock formations create brilliant natural climbing frames that kids absolutely love exploring.

Walkers will find this a cracking warm-up if you're staying near Hope Valley and fancy testing your legs before tackling bigger fells. The approach from Hathersage takes about 45 minutes of steady uphill walking through heather moorland. Experienced hikers often use it as part of a longer route connecting with Higger Tor and Carl Wark.

Families should allow two hours for the round trip, though teenagers might get restless on the walk up unless they're proper keen on the outdoors. Rock climbers and scramblers get the most from a visit - the tor offers some lovely bouldering problems and the views north towards Bleaklow are well worth the effort. It's free to access year-round, though winter conditions can make the rocks slippery. From North Lees Campsite or the other sites around Hathersage, it makes for a decent half-day adventure without needing to drive anywhere.
