Owler Tor

Standing stones crown this modest gritstone tor, creating an almost prehistoric atmosphere that feels miles from civilization despite being easily reached from Hope Valley. The weathered millstone grit formations make for decent scrambling, though it's hardly the Peak District's most challenging climb. What makes Owler Tor special is the sense of solitude - you'll often have the rocky outcrop entirely to yourself, even on busy weekends when nearby Stanage Edge heaves with climbers and walkers.

Families with older children will enjoy the short walk up from the road, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky approach. The views stretch across the Dark Peak moors, taking in Bleaklow and Kinder Scout on clear days. It's proper wild country up here, with heather moorland stretching in every direction.

Allow an hour for the walk and exploration, longer if you fancy extending the route towards Stanage Edge. The tor works well as a quick morning or evening jaunt when staying at one of the nearby campsites around Hope Valley. North Lees Campsite sits closest, making this an easy leg-stretcher between longer Peak District adventures. Come prepared for changeable weather - this exposed spot can turn hostile quickly when the mist rolls in.
