Stony Pasture

There's not much to Stony Pasture - and that's rather the point. It's a moorland landmark above Hexham where the views stretch across the Tyne Valley without a fence or viewing platform in sight. Just you, the wind, and that particular Northumberland light that turns everything silver.

The pasture itself is open moorland, the sort of place walkers use as a waypoint rather than a destination. But if you're staying nearby - and there are a couple of solid glamping options within five miles, including the five-star Sycamore Pods - it's worth the detour on a clear day. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so depending on your route, and the reward is proper uncluttered space without the crowds you'd get at more famous vantage points.

Truth be told, it's best suited to walkers and people who genuinely enjoy moorland rather than families hoping for a quick photo stop. Kids will find it windswept and possibly tedious unless they're already keen on hiking. There's no café, no facilities, no interpretation boards - just the landscape. In winter it can be grim. In summer, when the light holds until late, it's genuinely lovely.

If you're based at one of the local glamping sites and fancy a morning walk before breakfast, or an evening ramble to clear your head, Stony Pasture delivers without fuss. Don't drive here expecting a spectacle. Come for the simplicity of moorland on your doorstep.
