Stoer Beach

The walk down to Stoer Beach takes you through rough moorland that opens suddenly onto red sandstone cliffs and a long stretch of golden sand. It's not a manicured seaside experience - there's real wildness to it, with the cliffs looming above and the Minch stretching out towards the Isle of Skye on clear days.

The beach itself is properly dramatic. Those towering sandstone formations aren't just decoration - they change colour with the light and make for genuinely compelling photography. Low tide reveals rock pools worth exploring if you've got kids in tow, though the walk back up is steep enough to grind on the legs after a couple of hours.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The track from the car park is about twenty minutes each way on rough ground, so it's not for pushchairs or anyone after an easy amble. The reward, though, is being somewhere that feels remote even though it's accessible - no crowds, proper views, and the kind of weather you need to plan around.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits less than a mile away, making this an obvious pairing for a Highland park holiday. Bring proper boots, check the weather, and don't expect facilities - there's nothing at the beach itself. It's free to visit and worth the detour if you're anywhere near Sutherland. Go at low tide if you want the full experience of the sand and rock formations.
