Steephill Cove Beach

The walk down to Steephill Cove from Ventnor is properly steep - hence the name - but the payoff is a sheltered beach that feels genuinely cut off from the rest of the island. You're hemmed in by high cliffs on both sides, which means the cove stays relatively quiet even when the main beaches get rammed with day-trippers.

It's a small beach, more a scattering of pebbles and sand at high tide, so don't expect sprawling golden shores. What you do get is a real sense of discovery. There's a tiny harbour with a few fishing boats, a couple of cafes selling the usual seaside fare, and enough character to justify the effort. The water's calm because of those protective cliffs, which makes it decent for a paddle if the weather's on your side.

This one's best for people who like a proper walk to reach somewhere worthwhile - families with young kids might find the descent and ascent tedious, though older children will probably enjoy the adventure. History types will appreciate the old smuggling stories that cling to the place. Walkers treating it as part of a longer coastal ramble get the most out of it.

Allow at least two hours if you're coming from Ventnor and want time to sit, eat, and actually use the beach. It's free to access - just park in Ventnor and walk. If you're staying at Isle of Wight Coastal Park or one of the other holiday parks nearby, it's an easy morning or afternoon trip that breaks up the usual park routine without requiring a car journey.
