St Martins Down

The climb up St Martins Down from Ventnor proper is a bit of a slog, but the views from this 235-metre chalk downland summit make every huffing step worthwhile. You'll find yourself looking out over the entire Undercliff stretching towards Blackgang, with the English Channel spreading endlessly south.

Walkers with a decent level of fitness will get the most from this one. The paths can be muddy after rain, and there's precious little shelter once you're up top, so check the weather before you set off. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper walk will love it, though toddlers might find the going tough.

What strikes you most is how wild it feels up here, despite being just a short climb from Ventnor's Victorian terraces. The downland grass ripples in the wind, and on a clear day you can spot ships crossing the Solent. It's completely free to access, naturally, and you'll want to allow at least two hours for the round trip if you're taking your time.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Ventnor like Appuldurcombe Gardens or Landguard makes this an excellent half-day adventure. The down connects with several other walking routes if you fancy extending the expedition along the island's dramatic southern coastline.
