Stenbury Down

At 240 metres above sea level, this chalk down delivers one of the finest panoramic views on the Isle of Wight. The climb from Ventnor isn't particularly taxing - a steady uphill walk through farmland that takes about 45 minutes if you're reasonably fit.

What strikes you first is the sheer scope of the vista. On a clear day you can see across the Solent to the mainland, with Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower just visible on the horizon. The view south takes in the dramatic chalk cliffs of the island's Undercliff, while westward the rolling downs stretch towards Brighstone Bay.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Stenbury Down, though families with older children who don't mind a proper hike will find it rewarding. The summit itself is fairly exposed - not much shelter if the weather turns nasty.

Timing matters here. Early morning offers the best light for photography, while sunset can be spectacular if you're prepared for the walk back in near darkness. Skip it in thick fog or heavy rain - you'll see nothing and the chalk paths become slippery.
