Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Forty-odd rescued donkeys graze across rolling paddocks just outside Ventnor, and frankly, watching them go about their business is surprisingly therapeutic. The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary started as a rescue operation and has grown into something rather special - these aren't performing animals, just donkeys being donkeys in a proper countryside setting.

Families with young children will get the most from a visit here. The donkeys are gentle souls, many with sad backstories that the staff are happy to share, and kids seem to instinctively understand that these animals deserve respect rather than entertainment. You can't ride them or feed them treats, but watching a donkey have a good roll in the mud or seeing the herd dynamics play out is oddly compelling.

Allow a good hour, maybe two if the weather's fine and you fancy a proper wander around the grounds. The sanctuary operates on donations rather than fixed admission, which feels about right for what is essentially a working rescue centre that opens its doors to visitors.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around this part of the island - Lower Hyde or Cheverton Copse are both within easy reach - it makes a lovely gentle afternoon out that won't exhaust anyone before dinner.
