Freemantle Gate

Standing at the edge of Ventnor's ancient boundaries, this medieval gatehouse marks where travellers once entered the old town limits. What remains today is a weathered stone archway - not much to look at, honestly, but historically significant as one of the few surviving town gates on the Isle of Wight.

History buffs will appreciate the Norman stonework and the gate's role in controlling medieval trade routes. The arch itself takes about five minutes to examine properly, though you'll want to wander the surrounding area to get a proper sense of how it fitted into Ventnor's defences.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no interpretation boards or facilities, just the bare stone structure. Better combined with a walk through Ventnor's older streets where you can piece together more of the town's medieval layout.

It's free to visit (being essentially a street feature) and accessible at any time. The gate works well as a quick stop if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Appuldurcombe Gardens or Parkdean Resorts Lower Hyde. Worth a brief detour rather than a dedicated trip, but proper medieval architecture is rare enough on the island to merit a look if you're in the area.
