Staffhurst Wood - Woodland Trust

Walking into Staffhurst Wood feels like stepping back in time. This Woodland Trust reserve near Lingfield is proper woodland - the kind with actual trees that have been here for centuries, not a manicured nature trail with interpretive boards every fifty metres. The paths wind through mixed woodland, and depending on the season you'll find bluebells carpeting the floor in spring or a decent canopy of oak and beech providing shelter in summer.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow amble rather than a quick circuit. Dog walkers seem to gravitate here, and fair play - the woodland paths are stable enough for most fitness levels, though there are a few steeper sections that'll test your knees. You can easily spend two hours here without feeling rushed, or knock it round in forty minutes if you're just after the main loop.

Historically minded visitors might find it interesting that these woods have been managed for centuries - you can spot the signs of traditional forestry if you know what to look for. But this isn't a heritage site with plaques and dates. It's really about the woods themselves: the sound of the canopy, the moss-covered logs, maybe spotting a woodpecker if you're lucky.

Staff Hurst fits well into a wider South East walking break. You're close enough to Lingfield for a cup of tea afterwards, and if you're based at Long Acres Caravan Park or trying out the glamping at Luna Domes a few miles away, it's an easy morning out that doesn't require booking ahead.
