Staddlethorpe Lake

The water at Staddlethorpe Lake sits perfectly still most mornings, which is exactly the point. This nature reserve near Brough is fundamentally a place for watching rather than doing - binoculars essential, trainers optional but sensible on the muddy bits.

It's a proper working wetland, the sort of spot where you'll see lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, something rarer that gets the twitchers genuinely excited. The lake itself isn't vast or dramatic, but that's rather the appeal. There's no themed cafe or visitor centre theatre - it's just water, reed beds, and the occasional flash of movement through your optics.

Walkers and birdwatchers will absolutely get the most from this. Families with restless young children might find twenty minutes quite enough. The reserve rewards patience and early starts; late afternoon tends to be quieter for wildlife but the light's often better then.

Brough's only a short drive away if you need supplies or a pub lunch afterwards. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Little Wold Away is exceptional - Staddlethorpe works brilliantly as a peaceful morning outing before heading to bigger attractions. Willow Pond Caravan Site and William's Den are similarly well-positioned for a day that includes this.
