Stackpole Church

The church sits alone in a field near Stackpole, just outside Pembroke - you'll find it on the coastal path between Bosherston and Freshwater East. It's a proper oddity: a roofless medieval church, gutted by fire in the 1700s and left to crumble, now standing like a pale skeleton against the Pembrokeshire sky. The walls are still solid, the windows intact, but inside it's all overgrown grass and gravel. You can walk right through it.

It's the sort of place that rewards a wander rather than a long stop. History types will appreciate the 13th-century stonework and the sheer brazenness of leaving it to decay instead of demolishing it completely. Walkers on the coastal path practically stumble upon it, which is half the appeal - no entrance fees, no opening hours to fret about, just access via the fields. Give it twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to sit and sketch or take photos.

For families camping nearby at Sky Meadow or Freshwater East Caravan Club, it's a worthwhile detour on a coastal walk. Kids usually find ruins more interesting than intact churches anyway. The real pull here is the isolation and the sense of time stopped mid-decay. It's bleak rather than pretty, which is precisely what makes it worth the trip. Bring a camera; bring good boots for the muddy approach. Don't expect facilities or visitor amenities. This is Pembrokeshire being properly Welsh and properly wild.
