Stackpole Warren

Sand dunes that shift with the wind, marram grass whispering in the breeze, and the occasional glimpse of rare birds - Stackpole Warren is what happens when nature is left to do its thing without interference. This is a proper sand dune system just outside Pembroke, the sort of place where you're genuinely walking through habitat rather than a manicured nature trail.

What you get is space. Lots of it. The reserve spans dune grassland and slack wetland, and the whole thing feels more active than static - the landscape changes depending on season and weather. It's excellent for walkers who want something beyond the obvious coastal path, and birdwatchers will find genuine value here, particularly for spotting birds that use the dunes as stopover points. Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) will enjoy it, though there's no playground or facilities - it's stripped-back stuff.

Allow two to three hours to properly explore without rushing. Bring binoculars if you're keen on birds. The nearest facilities and parking will be in Pembroke itself, a few minutes' drive away.

For a caravan or glamping holiday based at Sky Meadow or Freshwater East nearby, this works as a proper half-day excursion that breaks up the coastal routine. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's genuine - the sort of reserve that rewires your brain about what nature reserves can be.
